The ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia was a result of the inability of more than one group to coexist equally in a region. The conflict between the Israelis and Muslims in the Palestinian region is also a result of the inability of two distinct cultural groups to exist in a region. The treatment of the Native Americans by the U.S. government in the 19th century can also be classified as the inability of two distinct cultural groups to coexist.

The melting pot theory of ethnic relations says that immigrants should leave their culture behind and "melt" into the culture of the United States. The concept of the culture of the U.S. is multi-ethnic. The fruit bowl or salad bowl theory says that each group brings something different to the culture as a whole. It is necessary for their culture to remain intact because it is an essential part of the whole culture.
