Propaganda is a common technique of persuasion used by government agencies, political campaigns, special interest groups or other organizations to build emotion for their cause or against the other. These propaganda tools are seen in all aspects of our everyday life. They appear in magazines and newspapers, on the television and radio, on billboards and other public advertisements. Some are attempts to persuade, others to educate and still others to discount opposing perceptions.

• Post two examples of propaganda that you see in your community. Describe the main theme and what group or organization has created it.

Corporate Impact: Summaries of how 3 different major U.S. businesses (such as

AIG, GM, Sally Mae, Lehman Brothers, Citigroup, etc.) were impacted by and/or contributed to the current U.S. recession or their own financial hardships. Each summary should be supported by and reference one or more reliable media resources (articles, videos, blogs, podcasts) examining the issue. (20 points per summary for a total of 60 points)

1. The United Nations is currently involved in a variety of conflicts and other public issues by initiating policies to help resolve them. Explain how the United Nations engages in campaigning to resolve global issues. 

2. The United States government was founded on the basis of civic discourse. How does the United States government encourage and protect civic involvement at the political level? 

3. Internet blogging has become one of the more widely used methods of political discourse. Briefly explain how blogging is having an impact on political and social discourse. 

4. News blogging has taken the news media by storm and challenged traditional news outlets in how they present the news. Describe the positive and negative attributes of news blogging. 

5. Political campaigns engage in a variety of forms of political discourse and propaganda. Describe ways in which campaign advertisements engage in both political discourse and propaganda. Think back to the activity involving John McCain and Barack Obama's campaign ads for examples. 

6. Grassroots organizations are created to help facilitate or support candidates and initiatives. They can begin at the local level and sometimes develop into significant national organizations. Briefly describe the functions of a grassroots organization by giving 4-5 examples of how they organize, operate, lobby and engage in activities.
