Throughout the semester we have looked at how technology has challenged and changed the way in which we form our identity, communicate and connect with others, and maintain connections over time.

Using information from both primary and secondary sources of information gathered this semester (theories, concepts, and research), prepare an open letter to the next generation clearly outlining how technology may affect their lives both personally, and in their relationships.

In Chapter 8 of "Book the First: Sowing," Dickens writes that the workers in Coketown often went to the library and, once there, they "took De Foe to their bosoms, instead of Euclid, and seemed to be on the whole more comforted by Goldsmith than by Cocker." Mr. Gradgrind laments the people's choice of reading material, but the narrator's satirical comments defend it. Note that Daniel De Foe (Defoe) and Oliver Goldsmith are popular novelists, while Euclid is the father of geometry and Edward Cocker a producer of arithmetic books.

Why are the people of Coketown drawn to works of imagination rather than to works based solely on facts? Why is imagination or fancy important to people, in general? Would the people of Coketown likely be interested in reading Hard Times? Why?

1) The United States is revered as one of the greatest democracies in World History. However, in truth, it is a republic. Please explain how the Republic of the United States is actually different than the basic concept of a democracy. 

2) The United States Constitution is established to give power in the form a republic. The three branches of government are created in a way that no one has total authority over the other. This system is called checks and balances. Explain how the basic citizen has authority over each of the three branches of government. 

3) Political Parties have become the most influential aspect of an election, even more so than the candidate at times. Political party affiliation is typically a bigger influence on how people vote than the actual candidate. However, many people feel that the two party system does not encourage real change by the politicians and maintains a status quo. In the Presidential election of 2000, third party candidate Ralph Nader had a major impact on the election. Explain Nader's impact on the election. 

 Examine major themes in the novel, Internment – resistance, activism, power of social media, religion, faith, oppression, violence, racism, coming of age, identity, power and privilege, individual vs. society. Spend some time creating connections that examine the themes listed above.
