Why we cannot do vector cross product in 2d?

Calculate the work done in moving a particle of mass .250 kg fromx=-3 to x=6 if the velocity of the particle can be described by the equation x=.25x^3+2.0x^2-3x+4. Please show all work (step by step). I was using the equation Ek=1/2mv^2, but I dont know if that is right. My final answer was 12900 J.
