Lecture : Plant Evolution, Structure, and Growth
Document Summary
Have cell walls made of cellulose (a carbohydrate) (sugar) Evolved from green algae more than 500 million years ago. Lots of glucose stuck together as a result of photosynthesis is called starch. Transports water and minerals up into the shoot (stems and leaves) Root hairs increase surface area for the absorption of water and minerals. The solutes in root hairs maintain the movement of water into the roots by osmosis. Cohesion during transportation then keeps the water moving upward through the plant. Consists of organs called stems and leaves. Stems support the structures of the shoot system by their turgor pressure, thick cell walls of cellulose, and displaying leaves. Leaves serve as the main photosynthetic organ in most plants. Roots rely on sugar produced by photosynthesis in shoot system. Shoots rely on water and minerals absorbed by root system. In most eudicots, the vascular tissue consists of vascular bundles arranged in a ring.
