After you enter the room with only a pen and a manila folder containing a notepad and several forms, you introduce yourself to the female visitor and sit down at the table. She has obviously been crying, and her hands are visibly shaking. Asking this open-ended question at the beginning of the interview will allow for me to observe any verbal or non-verbal cues the woman displays as she recounts her version of what transpired. To start off the interview, this simple question could get the interviewee to open up and provide more useful information.
