HSCI10171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Serous Fluid, Serous Membrane, Intercostal Space
Document Summary
Apex rests on the diaphragm at about the 5th intercostal space (or 5th to 6th rib) Pericardium: a loose sac of fibrous tissue anchors to diaphragm and sternum and lined with serous membrane that encase the heart, parietal pericardium. Lines fibrous pericardium: visceral pericardium, covering to heart, serous fluid, fills the space between the layers of pericardium. Epicardium: outside layer, this layer is the parietal pericardium, connective tissue layer. Myocardium (thickest layer: middle layer, mostly cardiac muscle. Right and left side act as separate pumps. Chambers and great vessels: chambers, right atrium. Left ventricle: great vessels, vena cava (inferior and superic, pulmonary artery (carries blood away from the heart to lungs, pulmonary veins (carries blood from lungs to heart, aorta(carries oxygenated blood to body) The heart: valves: valves open as blood is pumped through, held in place by chordae tendineae ( heart strings , connected to papillary muscles, close to prevent backflow, blood flows in one direction.
