A good leader in one state might be a terrible leader in other situations. Captain philips exhibited outstanding leadership skills for the setting he was in and due to this he had the capability of protecting his crew members and ship from pirates. Captain phillips had valid supremacy over the crew members, and as a skilled captain he had proficient power because of his capability. Given that it was his first time directing the mates he had no reward power or referent power. As a captain, phillips had some intimidating power even though it was not too much.
