Leads to the formation of oxidized electron carriers like nad+. Use up energy in the form of atp adp. Anabolism and catabolism (metabolism: anabolic and catabolic pathways are reciprocally regulated, but not simply the reverse of each other. The two types of reactions can occur in different cellular locations (and even in different organs!). There are thousands of metabolic reactions, but most fall into only a few categories. hydrolysis, isomerization, bond formation and oxidation/reduction. The reactions that govern metabolic processes are catalyzed by enzymes. Each enzyme catalyzes only one specific reaction or set of reactions. Increase local concentration of substrate(s) at the catalytic site. Hold all the appropriate atoms in the correct orientation for the reaction that is to follow.
