BIO 259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Neuroglia, Olfactory Tract, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Exteroreceptors- located near the surface of the body, gather information about the external environment. Enteroreceptors- located deep inside the body, gather information about changes inside the body: response to stimulus, generator potential. Change in membrane potential: generator potential, characteristics of generator potentials, localized (not propogated or cannot be transmitted) Must be capable of evoking action potentials in the peripheral process of the sensory nerve. Use depolarization to cause the generalization of an action potential and the action potential will send the info to the brain: response is graded according to stimulus strength. The stronger the stimulus, the greater the generator potential and depolarization. Can see the relative strength of a stimulus: generator potential is maintained for as long as the stimulus is present. The longer the stimulus is present, the longer the generator potential is maintained. Your brain knows what type of receptor is present: coding for stimulus location, location of receptor.
