Very brief retention of the direct effects of stimulations of the senses: afterimages. Sensory experience observed due to the reactive response in sensory receptors to overstimulation or prolonged stimulation. Receptors continue to respond even after the stimulation is gone. Retina = sensory receptors: light/dark rods and color cones. Positive afterimages: see same (light from light stimulation: rod sensory receptors, staring at a sparkler or bright lights. Negative afterimages: see opposite (reversal of colors, dark from light: cone sensory receptors, the american flag on slides, visible persistence (vince di lollo) Temporal integration of static vision over 0. 1 sec. Showed to photos of many dots and asked for the missing dot. Notice when the delay was less than 0. 1 sec, the images are integrated and it is easy to see the missing dot, people see all the dots simultaneously. Static scenes in movies are seen as continuous because of this: motion perception.
