Document Summary
Transduction: generally conversion of energy from one form to another; in this case, stimulus energy is converted into nerve impulses. Smallest amount of energy needed for conscious detection of a stimulus; at least half of the time it is present. Ex: tick of a watch at 20ft in a quiet room, teaspoon of sugar in 2 gallons of water. Smallest difference detectable 50% of the time. Jnd for a given sense is proportional to stimulus strength and is constant. Subliminal stimuli: stimuli just below level of conscious awareness. Brain stops attending to constant, unchanging stimuli; like air conditioning in the background -> we tune it out. Sensory receptors become less responsive to constant stimuli. Tiny eye movements that prevent adaptation to visual stimuli. Corresponds to the length of the light waves (wavelengths) Red light = longer wavelength (~700 nm) Bends light waves so the image can be focused on the retina. Its muscles control the size of the pupil.
