Merchant diasporas - people (mostly men) who went away to work in areas that are vastly different cultures. Cross-cultural brokers, they will have to know the language and customs of the place they inhabit in order to be able to trade. They will bring things from one world to the other. Adopted different cultural practices as well as bringing their culture into the new area (food, religion, art) Trade and commerce - the difference is that "trade" means the exchange of high value goods. "commerce" is the exchange of goods that have low value. Pepper went from a luxury good to everyday people usage. They are different than herbs because herbs tend to only be used for their leaf: nutmeg. Comes from the banda islands of indonesia: cinnamon. Grows in indonesian island in ceylon: clove. Spice trade: han empire and roman empire. The rich spice their foods to demonstrate their wealth.
