It was the portuguese & dutch intervention that were chiefly responsible for the states growing weaker. The introduction of islamization is, by far, the most dramatic change in the archipelago. Gradually replaced the hindu, buddhist, animist mixture that had been typical of the charter era. Permanently changed the archipelago because today, sea has the most muslim population in the world (indonesia).
