Outline -- re-integration on the mainland c. 1400-1850: introduction. The charter or the classical era came to an end by late 14 t h century. Political centers moved from the interior to coastal areas. New religion gained ground (theravada buddhism and neo-confucianism) New ethno-linguistic groups (tais replaced khmers as the dominant ethnic group) No new grand temples were built; old empires all disintegrated/fragmented (pagan, angkor, dai viet) In place of these 3 great empires, 25 to 30 little kingdoms emerged & fought one another. It was a period of fragmentation and cultural transition. 1400-1450 until 19 t h century: territorial integration/consolidation took hold on mainland. By 1820, only 3 great empires on mainland (siam, burma, vietnam). People and cultures blended to become more cohesive; forming national units (burmese people, burmese culture, vietnamese people). It laid the foundation for the 3 main states found today. Look at: state & culture formation across mainland that eventually leads to colonial rule.
