When people start deviating from social gender roles, people take offense to it. It looks strange when one gender goes into a profession in which the other is dominant. Soc 302: glass ceiling glass escalator (christine williams): the glass ceiling is an invisible barrier. It applies to women who are in male-dominant professions (you start moving up, and all of a sudden you hit a glass ceiling). The glass escalator is the opposite of the glass ceiling.
