Week thirteen (or fourteen); lecture twelve: genre: the. Late-1970s on: related to consumer capitalism, reaction to modernism, an aesthetic sensibility, a reaction to modernism, but also a continuation of modernism, things that were tangential were made central. Characteristics of postmodernism: a tenuous hold on reality. The aesthetic does not have a strong regard for reality: i. e. mixing eras/media, unrealistic worlds/physics, the erasure of the distinction between high and low culture, modernism distinguished elite/high cult from low. Postmodernism collapses the distinction (think warhol: les miserables becomes les miz, corporations trying to appearl to all audiences/levels at once, pastiche. Imitating the formal strategies or content of previous texts with no added meaning or sense of satire/parody. The imitation is meant to recall these past genres and styles; use the meaning/feeling from the original. The point is the reference itself, not a new meaning (as in intertextuality) Examples: sleepless in seattle"s use of an affair to remember; body.
