Studying race , men of colour = universal racial subject. Studying gender , white women = universal female subject. Gender + race initially treated as 2 independent axes. Women of colour suffered from double jeopardy, but they did not identify with experiences of african american, latina, asian american, native american women. Although there is more recognition of links between gender/race, race remained undertheorized even in writings of women of colour. Need for analyses that recognise/account for simultaneity of gender & race. Gender more rooted in biology than race (in bodies, reproduction, sexuality) Sex gender system captures idea of societal arrangements by which biological sexuality transformed into socially significant gender. Gender may be used to refer to socially created meanings, relationships, identities organised around reproductive differences. Gender as a social status/organizing principle of social institutions detached from/going beyond reproductive differences. Gender as an ongoing product f everyday social practice.
