Document Summary

South was a hot mess post war. 1865 they created freedmens bureau: sharecropping means you share the crops. They farm a share of the plantation and provide part of what they grow as rent: you need tools, seeds, etc. but no money! Landowner loans you the money to buy tools. Not just hanged: beaten, stabbed, burned alive. Natives were a barrier to this: black hills (dakotas) controlled by sioux indians, sovereign by treaty. Indian wars: not a great name because the 2 sides were not equal, ghost dance. Indians lived tribally in communal lands: us took land and created different parcels of land, of the 138 million acres us kept over half of it, and kept the most fertile lands. Not just $, but $ you invest: capital is controlled by the people who control the means of production. Britain retaliated by raising tariffs against us southern agriculture.
