35 views2 pages

Document Summary

When you inbreed, you get inbreeding depression which is the opposite of heterosis. Three things to consider for a crossbreeding system: heterosis, breed complementarity, combining traits of 2 or more genes, market ability- you have to be able to sell what you breed. Fairly uniform cattle 67% of max heterosis. Need > 50% cows, 2 bull, and 2 breeding pastures: usually use 1 bull for every 30 cows. Most times you have one bull (angus) breeding a brahman breed, and then one bull (brahman) breeding the angus breed in the farm. Normally wouldn"t do in a herd less than 100 cows. *a composite is a cross of 2 or more breeds. Advantages: easy- only have to use 1 bull. % of max heterosis depends on composite. Disadvantages: finding a good source (not as difficult as once was) There is heterosis, but nothing can beat the holstein.
