Document Summary
Groups: set of two or more people who identify or share interest with. Race and ethnicity are a social construct. Race is defined and maintained through interactions. Sociologists see race and ethnicity as social constructions because they are not rooted in biological differences. Race: primarily based on perceived biological characteristics, phenotypes (in other words, physical traits) Human groups that entertain a subjective belief. Something to do with biology even though blood relation does not exist. Groupings of people believed to share common descent based on perceived innate physical similarities. Unequal access to social, political, and economic resources based on racial differences. Often presumptuously correlate race labels with ethnicity. More than skin tone is involved with construction of race. Subpopulation of individuals has shared historical experiences, as well as unique organizational, behavioral, and cultural characteristics. Ethnicity can be seen as hidden, depending on individual preferences and social-spatial contexts, while racial identities are always on display.
