Wanted to make sure they weren"t too harsh that they cut into the productivity of the slaves. Slaves knew their masters and their quirks and moodiness. There are not many legal restraints on what he could do. In terms of punishment, there was room to do whatever they wanted. Slave owners cannot abandon slaves when they get old. Black and white kids played together until they were 6 or 7. In charge of seeing the slaves get done their day to day work in the fields. Slave parents are never guaranteed to be with their children. They could be punished in front of children.
