18th century: 1700-1799: native american children were given more freedom and independence. Physically exhausting work: death rate for black children is high, mother and father might work on separate plantations. One of the most common reasons for one to escape: education for enslaved youth was illegal. Slave owners would not want slaves to know how to print and then lead to a revolt. Oral transmission of faith was a form of learning: skills were learnt on plantation. Carpentry, blacksmith~no way close to how white children learned by apprenticeship: by 18th century, more black slaves in carolina than whites, how parents gave names to their children. 90% of the names are from the bible for both boys and girls. Faith in bible is so intense that some people opened it up and randomly picked a word from it. Of the first born had their parents name. In the area of delaware, names are from the bible.
