ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Reticulorumen, Rumen, Sodium Bicarbonate
Document Summary
2. 4 git pt 4 git more on microbes. Microbial fermentation: microorganisms living in gut are alive. Microbes themselves and what they secrete get mixed up w/ feed passing through git. Some of things they secrete are good (vits. ), some are bad (methane gas) and microbes themselves are good food. What they secrete adds to the character and flavor of what is being produced (such as alcohol, pickling, or lactic acid) About those microorganisms: many bacterial types (in reticulorumen) Symbiosis: mutually beneficial relationship bw rumen microorganisms and animals. Animal provides feed, heat (narrow temp range), moisture, waste removal (perfect enviro for microorganisms) Microorganisms aid in digestion of complex carbs, produce vits. (microbial protein as well) Microorganisms are picky eaters: organisms respond to diet. Good things microbes do: fibrous digested more efficiently by microbes in rumen, cellulose and hemicellulose can be digested only by microbial enzymes.
