PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Homeostasis, Libido, Ovulation
Document Summary
Psyc 1 lecture 9 part 12: what drives us. Motivation: need/desire that energizes and direct behavior. Instinct theory: guided by instincts; kinetically predisposed to do certain things versus other. Ex: birds flying south in the winter: drive-reduction theory: see below, arousal theory: we are motivated to obtain some optimum level of arousal, maslow"s hierarchy of needs: see below. Drive-reduction theory: we are motivated to engage in behaviors to reduce certain drives: ex: when hungry, motivated to eat. Homeostasis: biological equilibrium: aim of drive reduction. We are pushed by needs and pulled by incentives (rewards) We are not motivated to get rid of arousal, but to seek optimum levels of arousal: too little arousal = bored, too much arousal = stress/anxiety/fear. Yerkes-dodson law: we are seeking some optimum level of arousal; performance of a task is maximized by having some optimum level of arousal. Once you have all of the other things, you are better prepared to have a family.
