PHIL 4 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cyrenaics, Naturalistic Fallacy, Epicureanism
Document Summary
Hedonism the view that the only things that are intrinsically good are pleasure and the absence of pain, and the only things are intrinsically bad are pain and the absence of pleasure. Intrinsically good good in itself e. g. pleasure. Extrinsically good good only as a means to getting something else good e. g. exercise >> be healthy >> survive . Cyrenaics (egoistic) getting good now not avoiding pain to have pleasure in the future; selfish did not spread happiness; chasing short term pleasures. Epicureans (egoistic) good in moderation; still kept the future in mind; minimizing pain. Almost everyone almost all the time pursues pleasure and avoids pain. If one explores ones own and others actions, one will find them ultimately motivated by these two goals. Cradle argument: babies and very young children, who haven"t been corrupted by the errors of human culture naturally pursue pleasure and avoid pain.
