Document Summary
2700f ethics and value theory september 26, 2016. We pursue all and only pleasure and the absence of pain: assumes what we take to be maximal pleasure. C1 all and only pleasure and the absence of pain is non-instrumentally valuable. Friendship, virtue, knowledge : how do we decide what is valuable when these things conflict, compare them using a master value, we should pursue them based on how much pleasure they produce, systematization argument. (1) evil pleasures: vice, people who experiences these pleasures are less good (intrinsically it is good but instrumentally it is bas) (2) hierarchy of pleasures: some pleasures are better than others, pleasures taken in noble pursuit are better than those taken in personal pursuit, sex and drugs vs. knowledge and virtue. Intellectual pleasures vs. bodily pleasures: whichever produces more pleasure, is the better option. Only cares about the quantity of pleasure. Defend qualitative hedonism (compared to quantitative hedonism)
