Faculty of language - way of referring to all the cognitive abilities that give rise to language in humans. It is the set of abilities that allows us to convert from physical signals like sound (or visual signs) to thoughts. Comprehension - language faculty turns speech into sound (or signs in sign language) into complex meanings. Production - language faculty turns complex meanings into motor commands for the vocal tract (or hands in sign language) Rules on about how to make sentences by putting words. It is difficult to study all aspects at the same time, so focus on one aspect of language at a time. We have intuition of certain set of basic sounds. Phoneme - basic sound, speech sound, the smallest segment of speech that leads to a meaningful difference between words. How to create phonemes: pick a word in the language, change the sound in the word.
