Most of the prevention efforts about problems of youth aren"t grounded in developmental theory instead: if you raise people"s self esteem everything it is fine, simplifying problems, and undermining developmental theory. Substance abuses - they might all have common developmental foundations and solutions. Food - not really different than alcohol and drug abuse. Sex - kids who are committed to the idea that sex is a solution to anxieties. Narcissism - so self entitled that it interferes with functioning with the world. Problems of youth must see youth as residing within a developmental niche that includes family and a radius of significant others Niche generates anxiety - same for all of us, solution becomes more or a bigger part of the problem. When anxiety overloads a person they decompensate. problem behaviors begin to manifest themselves problem behaviors - manifestation of anxiety, solution to anxiety but isn"t constructive.
