Spc3301 lecture 3 notes thursday, january 24 2019. Perception - active process of creating meaning by selecting organizing and interpreting people, objects, events, situations and other phenomena. Organization constructivism - we organize and interpret experiences by applying cognitive structures called schemata. Personal construct allows us to make a more detailed assessment of a person or situation we use adjectives for preexisting categories assumptions - pretty, ugly, smart, stupid etc. Stereotype give us guidelines of what we can expect from someone of a situation prediction based on the category which we place someone in. Script tells us how to behave guide to action in particular situations. Example: goal: make one good friend this year prototype: mom and aunt diane personal: similar to me (age, parenting, marriage, educated, professional, values) stereotype: meet someone - talk about last weekend. Scripts: based on above criteria(so move friendship along or keep as an acquaintance)
