Listening- the process of receiving attending to, and assigning meaning to aural and visual stimuli. Discriminate listening- "distinguish the auditory and visual stimuli" Comprehensive listening- "understand the message in order to retain, recall, and possibly use that information at a later time" Therapeutic listening- "help to a person who needs to talk through a concern" Critical listening- "evaluate the merits of the message" Appreciative listening- "obtain sensory stimulation or enjoyment through the works and experiences of others" People oriented- tend to have a high regard for another person"s feelings and seek to find common ground with the speaker. Action oriented- like to receive concise, succinct information that is free from mistakes. Content oriented- you prefer challenging and complex messages. Better listeners have been correlated to better speakers.
