Document Summary

One way to characterize communication is a set of variables: In the smcre model, receivers have a significant part to play in the public speaking process because they decode the messages senders give to them. Denotative meaning: the literal of explicit definition of a word. Connotative meaning: the implied meaning of a word based upon its use within a given context. Listening: the process of receiving attending to, and assigning meaning to aural and visual stimuli. The systems model characterizes listening as more than simply the interaction of a sender and a receiver. Presage: includes the things listeners bring to a listening situation and the context in which listening occurs. Factors such as personality, cultural norms, abilities, and goals are also considered. The listening process is affected when any of these are altered. Discriminative listening: distinguishing the auditory and visual stimuli. Knowing the difference between the sound of a cat and the sound of a car.
