Document Summary

Fooled himself into thinking he accomplished that. Could not respond to truly global skeptic -> involves starting from nothing rather than another belief. Most important beliefs really have no rational justification & that this is simply the whimsical condition of mankind . Problems even trying to follow hume"s advice. Began with the classical philosophical conception of knowledge as justified true belief. Skeptics like descartes & hume demanded global, foundational justifications for our beliefs, holding that without such foundations none of our beliefs turn out to be justified. Descartes -> wanted to find foundation that was not subject to skeptical challenge & earn his right to his beliefs. Hume -> faced this skeptical predicament squarely, arguing that we are creatures of nature (not reason) *still really care about justification & look for ways to form beliefs in more justified ways. It is unnatural for us to simply rest content with explaining rather than justifying our beliefs.
