SOC SCI H1G Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Magic 8-Ball, Naturalized Epistemology, Descriptive Knowledge
Document Summary
Hume & descartes famous for their skeptical worries. Naturalized epistemology = looking at theory of knowledge through the sciences. Starting with more primitive knowledge (descartes) & moving forward. Conclusion: we can"t learn anything without making assumptions but actual assumptions that we make are often false. Want to learn how our faculties really work & how we arrive at knowledge. One is more desirable than the other. What about knowledge makes it more desirable. Students would come talk to socrates & create a dialogue. Want to focus in on abstract idea -> knowledge in this case. Knowledge is not just belief it is true belief with logos. Got to conception of knowledge by contemplating their idea of knowledge. Logos = logical argument, reason, appealing to fact, word, explanation, justification (logos plays a lot of roles) Distinction goes as far back as western philosophy. Ancient greeks distinguished between knowledge & opinion. Opinion is easy -> is just what you believe.
