SOC SCI H1G Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Normal Science, Empirical Evidence, Cross Purposes

17 views4 pages

Document Summary

Process is not mediated by neutral evaluation of evidence. Truth is not the aim of science. Aim of science is getting the community to agree with you. Question of values can be answered only in terms of criteria that lie outside of normal science entirely. Arguments about the merits of different paradigms are circular. Paradigms involve question: which problems is it more significant to have solved? (ssr p. 109-110) In paradigm choice there is no standard higher than the assent of the relevant community (ssr p. 94) Only way that we have to get at the truth is through science, yet the only thing science cares about it the consensus of one group within the scientific community. *kuhn also argues that scientists literally see & experience different things within the natural world. Harder obstacle to overcome because they don"t find common data against which to compare with other groups.
