Document Summary

Have come a long way from hume"s time period. Does looking at modern psychology help us to understand whether hume was totally right. Carrying out the naturalistic investigation of the mind that hume called for. Hume"s main tool was introspection but was trying to make psychology scientific. Mind did not turn out to be as rational as everyone thought. Still thinking about hume"s lessons while we look at psychology. Hume"s exactly right that studying knowledge & rational justification needs to start with the mind but that he"s wrong that we can live with mere explanations for what we believe & be ok with that. Vision has the illusion of being a simple report about what is out there in the world. We do not retrieve or consult our memories, but instead construct them using whatever cognitive materials are close to hand. We see ourselves as retrieving or consulting memories -> go back into big store of them.
