Provides us with most comprehensive theory of human personality. Writers concerned with how the individual human nature fits into civilization & society. Living in society is not easy -> demands made & give up freedom to an extent. Will focus on freud & fairbairn mainly along with other authors. There are definitely theoretical mistakes in psychoanalysis especially by freud. Psychoanalysis was never able to come up with unified theory so we will look at two different perspectives. Successors able to make psychoanalysis more comprehensive. Freud wanted to understand how to correct it. Need to be able to prevent cruelty towards others. Can create personal agony & lead to cruelty towards other (neighbors) Wanted to free humanity from irrational & delusional thinking. Want humans to give up this sort of thinking -> have to understand what causes it in the first place. Delusions are things that people believe that do not align with reality -> distortion.
