Best form of rationality when separate from emotion. Ego makes the decisions based off of the demands of the id & the superego. Weak ego would give in to the id"s demands. Stronger ego would try to moderate everything so id is satisfied enough. Damasio"s theory (patients with damaged prefrontal cortexes) Emotion is such a natural part of being human that it is incorporated into decision-making process & cannot be separated. Phineas gage case -> ability to make rational, reasonable decisions was dramatically impaired. Superego exerts influence over the ego regarding what their best self would be doing & what society would demand. Kant: pure morality; kierkegaard: morality influenced by emotions. *best way to control the masses according to freud: religion. Moral code of superego: conscience & guilt/shame. An image of the perfect self towards which the ego should expire.
