Chapter 8: Sexual Arousal
• excitement
o first step where vasocongestion (blood flow into genital areas) occurs
o men: obvious response = erection
o women: lubrication, inner lips open up
• orgasm
o series of rhythmic contractions
o 0.8s intervals
o 3-4 in mild orgasm, 12 in intense orgasm
o women’s orgasm
▪ mistaking intense arousal for orgasm
▪ what does an orgasm feel like?
• spreading sensation
▪ sensations are similar for men and women
o faking orgasms
▪ 25% of men and 51% of women faked it
▪ not a good practice
• resolution
o body returns physiologically to unaroused state
o men: refractory period
• other models of sexual response
o Kaplan’s Triphasic Model
▪ Master’s & Johnson vasocongestion & muscular contractions PLUS desire
▪ desire can occur either spontaneously, motivating the person toward sexual
activity and physiological excitement, or physiological excitement can come
first, activating desire
o sexual excitation-inhibition mode
▪ dual control model: two processes
▪ 23232332222232
▪ 222222=12
▪ 3223 =10
▪ 3233=11
o personality and the dual control mode
▪ Rettenberger, Klein, and Briken
▪ no significant correlation between SES and the big 5
▪ inhibition – factor 1 (distraction, anxiety, performance): significantly
correlated with neuroticism and conscientiousness
▪ inhibition – factor 2 (concerns about consequences): negatively correlated
with extraversion, but positively correlated with neuroticism and
conscientiousness
• emotion and arousal
o daily diary method (website)
o happier = more thoughts of sex arousal
o negative emotions = also more sexual arousal
• the brain, spinal cord, and sex
