This quarter we have been discussing how individuals fit into society. The perspectives provided so far have different significance but they all advocate systems in which ordinary citizens rule -- citizen oriented thinkers. All favor what they think to be democracy -- government by the people and for the people and against dictators. A government in which the will of the people reigns free. The problem that they all address is the problem with authority and the people. Authority fixes boundaries on the behavior of people. All of the people we have read - machiavelli, locke, rousseau, marx and engels - seek to make men more free.
