Document Summary

Populations evolve in response to both biotic and abiotic factors in the environment. And as they evolve, their interactions within their environment may have to evolve in response. Ecology - study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment. Knowledge of science of ecology essential to make informed environmental/conservation decisions to help us be good and wise. Environmentalism: concern about, and action aimed at, protecting the environment. The central goal of ecology is to understand the distribution and abunsdance of organisms. The distribution of a species is often limited by biotic factors - interactions with other organisms. Interactions including competition, reproductive requirements, and parasitism can all affect the distribution of aspecies. Because of fitness trade-offs, organisms tend to be adapted to a limited set of physical conditions - to a particular temperature and moisture regime on land, or a particular water depth and movement regime in water.
