Document Summary

Gans: theorized that poverty is needed in society. There will always be relative poverty, but complete poverty as homelessness is unnecessary. Apology for the status quo : many theories as this were written from a place of privilege. Break own moral codes accidentally, unintentionally, remorsefully. Do something despite morals saying otherwise, while acknowledging they"re breaking own morals. Reject moral code and replace it with something else (their own ideas, that they believe are better) Aka absolutist notions" of what"s natural and what"s not, presumably unchangeable and applicable to everyone. In truth, different depending on gender, social class, race/ethnicity, age, region or country, etc. Ex: rules for alcohol consumption differ by age. Norms come from the people of a society. Society"s harmed if rules aren"t created and maintained by individuals. Rules against things that harm individuals in society. Harm or injury to individual, sickness, etc. The people of a society speak in absolutist forms, though most things are relativistic.
