Banned Substances:
The use of certain Performance Enhancing Substances by athletes, commonly called "doping" is
not allowed
If an athlete is caught using banned substances by the US anti-Doping Agency, the World Anti-
Doping Agency, or by any other agency of the ilk (the NCAA, for example), that athlete will be
punished
Common Performance Enhancers
Stimulants (speed):
oIncrease energy
oBoost mood
oSuppress appetite
oExamples:
Amphetamines
Help athletes
Boost endurance
Increase muscle mass
Recover quickly
Increase wakefulness
Commonly seen in cycling and speed skating (endurance athletes)
Ephedrine
Makes the heart beat faster --> increase blood pressure --> decreases
fatigue --> increases performance during short bursts of powerful effort
Commonly seen in football, track, and bodybuilding
Peptide hormones:
oHormones that are produced in the body and are created from amino acids
Examples:
Human growth hormone
Metabolism
Growth
Lead to increased muscle mass and decreased body fat
Allows for quick recovery from training

Swimming
Other sports
Erythropoietin (EPO)
Increases production of RBC --> increases aerobic capacity -->
increases muscle endurance
