Biomes: ecological convergence, temperature and precipitation predict vegetation types, there are a variety of names for and ways of noting biomes , a quick tour of biomes. Key terms/concepts: convergence in traits and habitats. Convergence: two distantly related species develop a very similar trait independently. Habitat: rainforests in costa rica and singapore. Different plants but look very similar since they live in similar habitats. Have similar traits due to convergence, not shared ancestry. Both have long, thin beaks for drinking nectar. Podocarp tree (gymnosperm) vs. bay tree (angiosperm) Have similar leaf structure: interpret various ways of graphically showing biomes. Mean average temperature vs. mean average precipitation. Mean average precipitation vs. mean average temperature. Temperature can run low to high or vise versa. Different titles can be given to similar biomes. Some graphs show area with permanent ice (antarctica: whittaker"s biomes.
