Mood/affective disorders are classified into two categories: depressive disorders feature persistent and pervasive feelings of sadness, bipolar disorders involve radical fluctuations of mood. Major depression: two or more weeks, five (or more) of the following symptoms: Negative moods, most of the day every day. Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Weight loss/gain (5% of body weight either way) Insomnia: affects about 6%-7% of americans in a given 12-month period, people aged 18-29 have highest rate of major depression. Persistent depressive disorder: lasts 2 or more years (average 5-10 years, not severe enough to be diagnosed as major depression, affects about 2-3% of population. Concordance rate between identical twins are 2 to 3x higher than rates between fraternal twins. Neurotransmitter deficiency: dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine decreased. Biological rhythms and damage to the left prefrontal cortex have been implicated in depression.
