Co-cultural theory: the relationship between power and language. If you are in the privileged class you get to set rules and norms of language. Dominant comm structures impede progress of those who do not conform to the norms. Power and words: think about the embedded sexism in our speech. Power and accent: think about who decided what good english sounds like. White people often use ethnic and racial labels for others but rarely for themselves. Hate speech: use of verbal comm to attack others based upon some social category. Disconfirming communication: comments that reject or invalidate a positive or negative self- image of our conversational partner. Confirming communication: comments that validate positive self-images of others. Understanding the power of language: use your words more carefully. Helps us express and interpret verbal aspects of communication. Influences how individuals interpret messages (especially those related to mood, feeling, and attitude) It can be very subtle and interpretation takes great skill.
