Inner coat - elastic membrane/connective tissue layer; innermost layer is endothelial cells. Creates growth factors that can stimulate smooth muscle. Forms a smooth lining of blood vessels that resists clot formation. Creates compounds to promote clot formation in injured areas. Condition where patchy deposits of fatty materials accumulate in the walls of arteries. leading to reduced or blocked blood ow. When vessel wall is injured, cholesterol seeps across the endothelium and accumulates in the cell wall. Macrophages try to clear the area but only make the area foamy . Stimulates the in ammatory process, more cells gather around the area and become a fatty mass or steak. Over time, collagen forms over the streak and develops a plaque. Reduced blood ow to the trunk, arms and legs. Mostly in men in their 70s and 80s. Most common symptom is pain in foot/calf when waking. Later s/s, pain at rest with relief when walking.
