Workstation: computer hardware dedicated to a single customer"s work. Clean: machine on which the os has been installed but no localizations performed. Unknown: a computer that has been misconfigured or has become out of date. Off: machine that has been retired and powered off. Entropy: deterioration that we don"t want that leaves the computer in an unknown state, fixed by a debug process. 3 critical issues involved in maintaining a work station os: loading the system software +applications initially, updating the system software +applications, configuring network parameters. Mistakes: manual processes are subject to human error. A small misconfiguration can cause a big failure. Nonuniformity: if you load the operating system manually, you"ll never get the same configuration on all your machines, ever. Cloning hard disks: setting up a host with the exact software configuration that is desired for all hosts that are going to be deployed. Software updates: updates can be automated, saving time and effort.
