Kinship helps understand how rights in families are connected to gender roles. Sexuality can be a gender role in rifkin, 3rd winki who was born male but also married men. In us, we think about sexuality is who becoming / choice but gender is who you are . So we believe marriage is a choice and desire, so it helps us think of sexuality about choice and desire too. But: it doesn"t work that way cross-culturally -- we have to remember the idea that sexuality is not universal. Today, still thinking about belonging as a part of citizenship (legal and belonging = different). Can ask this with race, age, gender ( women = 2nd class citizens in us ). this is all negotiated through kinship . Race and kinship politics ~ reading discussion. A: these white women have the power to make the black men belong / become citizens by marrying them.
