ANTH 157 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Artificiality
Document Summary
Idea of biology in us (idea of blood) is symbolic. Redefining kinship can choose family (before: family couldn"t cross racial boundaries) People will always change / negotiate what kinship means, but that doesn"t mean everyone gets to define that. Choice, nature, law us frameworks that we think are the most important. Ex: choose a family that"s not connected by law or family. People have adopted parents - friends parents who we think of being our own family, like a father or mother figure (symbolic blood) A friend we consider our sister (but family and law don"t consider them our legit sister because there"s less visibility of this kind of kin in our society, so they wouldn"t really belong ) Bottom line: the us has rules and it"s hard to look outside of them. Belonging - a key part of citizenship - is negotiated through kinship. This is happening on small scale and large scale societies.
